A baton, also called a nightstick, is essentially a stick of less than an arm’s length that is used by security and military personnel. It is ideal in situations where a firearm is not appropriate but greater force is needed that can be provided by bare hands. It is usually made of wood, plastic or metal. Early batons were made of rubber to produce lesser impact. Rubber batons are not in common use anymore but the original shape has been retained. There are, however, new innovations such as the telescopic steel baton.

It is made of steel and is designed like a telescope. It is typically composed of a cylindrical outer shaft containing telescoping inner shafts (typically 2 or 3, depending on the design) that lock into each other when expanded. A collapsible baton is advantageous in that it is easier to carry. A person can sit in the car with a baton hanging from the waist. It is also more versatile in usage. When collapsed it can be used in close range; extended, it has a longer reach.
