Uses of a Crank Flashlight

For emergencies, a crank flashlight can be very useful because it doesn’t need batteries. Instead, you turn the handle for about a minute at a time to charge the internal battery. The energy produced from turning the handle is conveyed to a small dynamo in the flashlight, which sends power to the small but powerful LED light. Often called windup flashlights, these could be a good addition when making a disaster-preparation kit.
A crank flashlight is often built with emergency devices, like an AM/FM radio or cellphone charger, all of which are powered with the same cranking motion. These flashlights are used when events such as natural disasters or a civil war disrupts regular power supply. It is also used in some places where batteries are expensive or the main supply of power is unreliable. People also bring these flashlights along when traveling to remote locations.
