Emergency food supplies

The weather bureau’s pronouncement of an incoming typhoon will bring some people to indulge in panic buying. A typhoon can cause power outage that usually lasts for days and people have learned to stock up on supplies for urgent situations. Emergency food supplies will be at the top of the list of things to buy. Canned goods and bottled drinks fly off the shelves and we cannot blame people for being alarmed to this extent. An emergency can make food supply disappear from regular outlets and resurrect at much higher prices.
What we don’t realize is that it is logical to always have a food pantry that is stocked for an emergency, with or without announcements from the weather bureau. These should include canned meat, fish, fruits and vegetables. Dried meats and nuts keep well without refrigeration. Granola bars and dried cereals are great sources of energy especially for kids. Electrolyte drinks are useful additions to your list. It is a good idea to get these in single serving sizes as refrigeration of opened bottles might not be available. Remember to check on expiry dates; consume them before they get too old and replenish with new packs from time to time.
