ELT or emergency locator transmitter is a kind of distress beacon used in aircraft. ELT’s main purpose is to notify potential rescuers that an aircraft is in trouble and need help. Most ELTs operate at 121.50 and 243.00 MHz At these frequencies’ distress calls can be picked up by Civil Air Patrol and the Military. But this is in the process of a big change.

406 MHz is the new distress call frequency. 406 MHz provides a better signal-to-noise ratio and has the capability to look at a lot more data with accuracy. Each new 406 MHz ELT has a discrete digital code that it transmits up to the satellite. The satellite transmits this information back down to the ground. The ground station reads this code and determines who owns the aircraft and what its tail number is.
